We complement our high-quality powder-coating assortment with a basic masking tape for curing temperatures up to 200°C for 30 minutes.
Powder coating is a very demanding application that requires special masking tapes that can withstand high curing temperatures and are tear-resistant enough to be easily removed afterwards. The process is used to create a highly resistant and uniform finish as protection or decoration on metal surfaces.
- In the first step, the free-flowing, dry powder is applied to the material electrostatically, so it is literally drawn into the tiniest gaps.
- In the second step, the coating is typically cured by heat, for example at 200°C.
This causes the powder, which often contains a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer, to melt into a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint. This exceptional resilience makes powder coating the preferred choice for metal working industries from household appliances to transportation and aerospace industries. In addition, powder coating does not release volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
For the masking tapes used in this extremely demanding process, it is crucial that they produce sharp edges and leave no residue when removed after curing. While paper masking tapes can withstand high temperatures, they have neither the tear resistance nor the tensile strength required for this application.
Therefore, we at tesa have developed special masking tapes that are very thin, seal tightly, and withstand high temperatures without shrinking or edge lifting. Even after curing, when they are partially covered with the hardened finish, they can be easily removed without tearing or residues leaving behind sharp edges. To complement our existing range and offer our customers an additional option, we have now introduced the new tesa® 50620 Basic powder coating tape.
Relaunched powder-coating assortment offers more choice
Our relaunched powder-coating assortment is designed to cover different application scenarios and a dwell time of up to 30 minutes. With a thickness of just 55 µm, tesa® 50650 offers good conformability. tesa® 50600, on the other hand, has a thickness of 80 µm and is therefore highly tear-resistant. Both tapes are made from polyethylene (PET) with a 30 µm silicone adhesive and can be used at temperatures up to 220°C. tesa® 4331 is equipped with a special backing of PET/nonwoven laminate for even higher tear resistance and excellent paint anchorage. It has a thickness of 110 µm and is temperature-resistant up to 200°C.
The new tesa® 50620 Basic powder coating tape has a thickness of 70 µm and a temperature resistance of up to 200°C. It has a high tear resistance and tensile strength and can be removed without residue. Like tesa® 50600 and tesa® 50650, the translucent tape is colored for easy identification and positioning. Thanks to our low minimum order quantity and wide distribution network, we can provide short lead times for this product as it is held in stock at various locations around the world.
