1. Choose the Right Tape

2. Prepare Well

When it comes to applying masking tape, adequate preparation is vital. A clean surface will ensure good adhesion; dust, moisture, grease or oil should be removed. Silicone and waxes found in polishes, for example, are also enemies of adhesion. To make sure the tape stays strong during removal, both the surface and the tape should be completely dry.

3. Apply Pressure

To get a truly flawless, clean paint edge with no paint bleed, you really do need to press down along the length of the leading edge of the masking tape to ensure there are no gaps.

4. Try Pre-Painting

If you’re going to be working with a darker paint colour, get a sharp edge by painting over the tape edge with a lighter colour first. Allow to dry before applying the darker shade. This technique fills any tiny spaces that remain under the tape – with the result of a perfect paint edge even on textured surfaces like woodchip wallpaper.

5. Removal

If possible, take the tape off when the paint is touch dry, but before it’s completely dry. When you’re ready to remove the tape and reveal your edge, the right angle is key. Aim for between 45 and 90 degrees to remove the risk of leaving any residues behind. Take it low and steady for the best possible finish. 

Another important thing to consider is the temperature of the substrate when you remove the tape. It should be at least 5°C to avoid the adhesive compound becoming brittle. This can cause the tape to tear or residue to remain on the surface.
Leaving tapes in place for extended periods can be problematic when removal is attempted – and this varies between the products. Each roll of tesa tape has information on the pack regarding use time.

6. Tips for Storage

To get great results from your tesa tape, it’s worth giving some thought on how you store it. Somewhere too hot like on a vehicle dashboard will dramatically accelerate the ageing process of the tape and make it more likely that it will leave residues on the surface when removed. 
When using masking tapes that have been stored somewhere very hot or cold – like a construction vehicle or van in the winter – acclimatise the tapes to the ambient temperature before you use them for the best possible results.
