Continuous production
with splicing tapes
for various industries
To ensure continuous production on printing presses, converting machines, and manufacturing lines of web-based material, splicing tapes join together two sections of a material, e.g. paper, film, or other substrates supplied on reels

Industrial splicing tapes are used in many industries to bond or join materials together during manufacturing, converting, and assembly processes. Effective splicing helps to enhance efficiency by ensuring continuity between reel changes and reducing downtime and costs. It also helps to maintain consistency, resulting in fewer defects and less waste.
Splicing has industrial applications across many sectors, including flexo & offset printing, paper production, and film converting. Used tapes are essential for connecting materials such as paper, film, or metal during manufacturing or production.
The tesa® product range of splicing tapes includes standard single-sided, double-sided, as well as specialty tapes tailored to different industry requirements. Discover our selection of splicing tapes below, including integrated flying splice tapes for automated processes and repulpable options with a comprehensive choice of backing and adhesive combinations.
Our tapes provide high-performance splicing on many materials. Backed by our extensive expertise in industrial adhesives, these tapes are designed to withstand the impact of mechanical and environmental factors, offering durability, high shear strength, and resistance to abrasion, temperature, and humidity.
Splicing tapes for paper reels in corrugated board production

To splice different paper grades of liner and flute, we offer a comprehensive assortment of double-sided splicing tapes. All ensure a fast splice preparation and offer high tack for secure splicing as well as heat and shear resistance for a stable corrugated production process. Special adhesive formulas and high coating weights ensure highest performance and secure bonds, even on rough and demanding surfaces and at high machine speeds and elevated temperatures.
Splicing tapes for melamine impregnated papers

Decorative melamine faced boards are used in the furniture and flooring industry. They are made up of wood based panels covered by layers of paper material.
In case of laminate flooring this would typically be an overlay/wear layer, a decorative layer, and a balance paper layer. Depending on the layer and application, these papers are printed and impregnated with melamine resin.
While being processed through the impregnation line, papers - and applied splicing tapes - need to resist moisture and temperature.

For easy and fast application: applied in one straight line, integrated segmented design | For manual tape application: applied in several individual stripes of tape | Split labels |
How to apply tesa® 54951
Reel preparation: Ensure a straight paper edge for easy application.
Apply splitting labels in suitable distance over entire reel width.
To avoid damage to the web, trim the paper’s edges on both sides.
Apply the tape in a straight line, leave a gap of about one thumb’s width to the edge of the roll.
Apply pressure to ensure excellent adhesion between tape and paper (best use a squeegee).
Carefully remove the liner in the direction of the splitting labels. Ready to splice!

Splicing tapes for absorbent hygiene product manufacturing
![Nonwoven converting line Nonwoven converting line](/en/files/images/202407/2/nonwoven-converting-line,11514112_crop16x9_18.webp)
Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHP), such as baby diapers, or feminine care and adult incontinence products, have made an important impact on the quality of life for generations of people worldwide. These type of products are constructed in layers, ensuring both the required absorbent as well as the impermeable properties. Examples for potential components are absorbent polymers, plastic films, and non-woven fabrics, and all of these materials differ in surface and overall physical properties. Reels of these different raw materials all need to be spliced during the AHP manufacturing process, which calls for specialized splicing tapes for each material and its specific corresponding production step.

Overlap splicing
Metal coils are spliced to run the metal continuously through finishing and treatment lines. The two most common splicing techniques used are “overlap splicing” and “butt splicing.” For overlap splicing we provide double-sided self-adhesive-tape solutions with proven adhesive systems to enable high shear-stress resistance at high temperatures, as well as a tensile-resistant backing to compensate for web stress. An additional benefit for added work safety is the combination of double-sided splicing tapes with edge protection tapes.
Butt splicing
An attractive alternative to splicing without overlaps is known as “butt splicing.” Here, very strong single-sided self-adhesive tapes with custom-made adhesive systems are used. A clear advantage is the reduction of material waste, commonly associated with overlap splices. For aluminum processors this type of splicing also offers the opportunity to economically use short-length coils by preparing sequences of coils.
