tesa develops flame-retardant adhesive tape for floor coverings in aircraft
First prototypes to be presented at JEC World in Paris this year
- tesa expands its flame-retardant range with a new solution for the aviation industry
- tesa® flameXtinct 45020 is completely halogen-free, self-extinguishing, and complies with all current fire protection regulations in the aviation industry
- Carpets in aircraft interiors can thus be bonded securely and removed without damage after use
Norderstedt – Strict regulations apply to components and material solutions in the aviation industry, especially when it comes to fire protection. In order to limit the consequences of a cabin fire and to ensure the greatest possible safety for passengers and crew, the installed components are tested for flammability, smoke development and toxicity. If all test criteria are comprehensively met, the materials may be used for aircraft construction. tesa, international manufacturer of innovative adhesive tapes and self-adhesive product solutions, has now expanded its range of flame-retardant adhesive tapes to include an application for the aviation industry. The new tesa® flameXtinct 45020 was specially developed for bonding carpets in aircraft interiors. The first international product launch will take place on April 25 at JEC World 2023 in Paris. JEC World is the leading international trade fair for composite materials.
Self-extinguishing and halogen-free
tesa has already set standards with its flame-retardant range tesa® flameXtinct. In the event of a fire, the adhesive tapes extinguish themselves after only a short time, are completely halogen free, and meet all current fire safety regulations according to UL94 and FMVSS 302. The new tesa® flameXtinct 45020 was also developed according to these specifications and also meets the aviation-specific requirements according to FAR 25.853 (a) Appendix F, Part I, (a), 1, (ii). In addition to its flame retardant properties, the differential adhesive system offers several advantages: strong bonding to many carpet types, repositionability during installation, and quick and damage-free removability from the subflooring. Cabin carpets can thus be easily and quickly replaced after use with little effort. “We are delighted to introduce flame retardant carpet laying tape, our latest addition to the innovative flameXtinct product range, at JEC World. Our flame retardant portfolio already covers a wide range of applications for a variety of industries. With this new solution, we have expanded the product range and thus added a suitable solution for the aviation industry to our portfolio,” says Frank Domann, Corporate Marketing Director Industrial Markets at tesa. The flame-retardant tesa® flameXtinct range is already being used successfully in the construction and transport industries, as well as in passenger transport and shipping. The adhesive tapes are particularly suitable for attaching lightweight components or bonding components such as mirrors or moldings.
In close cooperation with customers and partners
tesa works closely with partners and customers in various industries to develop suitable industrial adhesive solutions in collaboration with them. “We want to offer customers genuine added value with our adhesive tapes and system solutions. Our specialists in product and technology development work continuously to develop innovative adhesive tape solutions to solve the challenges of certain applications and industries. We have also succeeded in this with the new tesa® flameXtinct 45020,” adds Domann.
Product samples of the flame-retardant range can be extensively tested at JEC World 2023 in Paris in Hall 5, at booth 5Q48. In addition, tesa will be presenting other innovative products and application examples for other industries, such as the versatile application options of the tesa® ACXplus range or double-sided transfer adhesive tapes for simple assembly.
